The Abington Sewer Department reports
to a Board of Sewer Commissioners that provides the Department with policy, oversight,
and direction. The Board is comprised of five (5) elected members that might bi-weekly.
Each member is elected for a three (3) year term to expire on a staggering basis.
At the present time the members are:

The Department currently provides municipal sewer
service to approximately 5500 (6/04) residences and/or businesses in the Town
of Abington. We currently maintain about 90 miles of sewer pipes, 2,000+/- manholes
and 13 satellite pump stations. The Sewer Department is responsible for:
- The collection of the wastewater delivered to the municipal system and its
transportation to the regional wastewater treatment plants in Rockland and Brockton
for safe treatment.
- Proper maintenance, internal inspection, repair and
cleaning of the Town's sewer lines.
Maintenace and repair of all pumping
stations, including all associated equipment. - Locates sewer stub locations
for new connections; marking of sewer mains.
- Answer town sewer problems.
- Issue permits for municipal sewer connections.
- Inspects and
approve sewer connections.
- Enforce all sewer tie-in rules and regulations.
- Responsible
for the operations and maintenance of the Abington Sewer Collection System.
- Responsible
for all municipal pump station operations.
- Answer billing questions and
direct caller to appropriate personnel on sewer needs.
- Respond to emergencies,
and to assist other Departments, when requested or required.
All functions
of the Sewer Department are governed by rules and regulations approved by the
Board of Sewer Commissioners. Homeowner is responsible
for their sewer connection from their home to their property line. All
sewer connections must be installed by a Sewer Department approved Drain Layer(s).
